A 15-year-old boy has been charged with a stabbing which left a man with critical injuries in the Thames Valley town of Paeroa.
Police said the stabbing happened when the victim, 25, and his sister, 20, got into a fight with three men and a woman while walking home at 1.30am on Friday.
The victim was flown to Auckland on a rescue helicopter with multiple stab wounds.
His injuries were initially assessed as critical, but police said his condition improved and he was now expected to survive.
Detective Glenn Ewing of the Waihi CIB said a 15-year-old alleged offender was carrying what police believe to be the assault weapon when he was arrested on Friday afternoon.
He appeared in the Hamilton District Court on Saturday to face a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and a charge of male assaults female.
A judge remanded him in custody to reappear today for a bail hearing.
