KEY POINTS:
One of the firefighters battling this blaze at a fruit packhouse in Katikati last night was taken to hospital after he fell about 4 metres on to a cylinder.
About 12 appliances from Katikati, Waihi and Tauranga were called to the fire at the Satara packhouse on Wedgewood St at 5.15pm.
St John Ambulance communications centre spokesman Keith Hall said the 40-year-old fireman who fell suffered abdominal and back injuries. He was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a moderate condition. There were no other reported injuries.
The fire was well under way when firefighters arrived at the 200sq m packhouse and took about three hours to bring it under control.
There was nothing to indicate the fire was suspicious, said Inspector William Taylor of the northern police communications centre.
Satara is a kiwifruit and avocado business with packhouses and coolstores throughout the upper North Island.
Acting group general manager Wes Anderson-Smith said the fire had struck just days after the end-of-season packing and the store contained about 15 million kiwifruit.
