Fourteen people have been arrested in a major police drug and organised crime operation.
Operation Nest, largely based in Waitaki in north Otago, was a year-long operation focusing on the misuse of prescription medication and property.
More than 60 police officers were deployed across the country yesterday, resulting in nine arrests in Oamaru and five in Auckland and Whakatane, The Otago Daily Times reported.
Detective Sergeant Mike Ryder said he expected a "significant number" of charges to be laid.
Three Oamaru men appeared before a registrar in Oamaru District Court yesterday in connection with the operation, with more expected to appear today.
Mr Ryder said he hoped the arrests would reduce the availability of illegal drugs in Otago but the operation was not over.
"More people can expect a knock on the door," he said.
