A 13-year-old Masterton boy crashed his parents' car into a building while trying to evade police early Saturday morning.
The boy is in Wellington Hospital with severe injuries to his legs after he had to be cut from the wreckage.
A police patrol spotted the car, which had apparently been taken without the parents' permission, and attempted to pull it over because of the boy's driving. As soon as the boy saw the patrol car, he took off.
Masterton police senior sergeant Warwick Burr said the patrol gave chase, but decided to back off because conditions were too dangerous.
Police discovered the hatchback had ploughed into the Oasis Trust building after crossing a railway line on the wrong side of the road.
