A referendum on the hot issue of whether or not to fluoridate Hamilton's water is expected to cost around $12,000.
It will be held in conjunction with the October local body elections.
A tribunal decided last month fluoride should be removed from the city's water supply, however after a petition, a referendum will happen.
The councillor who collected signatures on the petition Ewan Wilson is happy it will be held at the same time as the election.
"It's 10 times cheaper than having to go out to a referendum other than it being held at election time."
