KEY POINTS:
A 12-year-old was among four youths who were arrested early today after two cars were set on fire in Hastings.
Senior Sergeant Ross Smith told NZPA the 12, 13 and two 14-year-old youngsters were picked up by police just after 3am, when they were investigating the car fires on Gascoigne Street.
The cars were broken into before being set on fire, Mr Smith said.
A police dog tracked down the youths, who were still on the same street as the fires.
"They just surrounded the area and scooped these four up and they admitted to it," Mr Smith said.
The four have been referred to youth services.
