KEY POINTS:
Fiordland's Routeburn Track is to get a $1.1 million makeover.
The Department of Conservation project will include a new information building and track upgrade at the Mt Aspiring National Park end of the track.
More than 10,000 people a year walk the full 33km length of the Routeburn, and another 50,000 visit for day trips.
The upgrade will provide a new multi-use building near the main carpark that will include new toilets.
Construction is scheduled to begin this month and be completed by the start of the next tramping season in October.
Further funding has been approved to upgrade the final section of the track from the lower Harris Basin.
Work on this will start in summer.
