11-year-old boy dies after Waikato crash

An 11-year-old boy has died following a horror crash in the Waikato last night.

Police confirmed the boy's death this afternoon.

The news came after emergency services were called to a single-vehicle crash on Durham St, in Ngaruawahia, just after 6pm.

There were seven people in the car - all believed to be aged under 15 and many are said to be related to each other, either siblings or cousins.

Police said just after 3pm today that the other six occupants remain in Waikato Hospital with serious to critical injuries.

One of the survivors is said to be a in a critical condition.

It is not yet known who was driving the vehicle at the time.

Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen Ambler said the whole situation was tragic.

"This is an absolute tragedy for a number of families and the community as a whole.

"All the youths are local to the area and our thoughts are with the family and friends of all those involved.''

Police officers are now investigating the circumstances of the crash and are calling for any witnesses of a white Toyota Wish vehicle in the Ngaruawahia area - between 5pm to 6.15pm - to come forward.

Police want to hear from anyone who might have seen a Toyota Wish similar to this one after the Ngaruawahia crash.

"It is too early to determine what may have caused the crash as there may well be a number of contributing factors,'' Ambler said.

"While our thoughts are with the families of those involved, Police are urging drivers to exercise caution on the roads, to drive to the conditions and to ensure people behind the wheel know their limits."
