Auckland Airport is giving away $120,000 to NZ charities as part of its 12 days of Christmas initiative this year. The Herald is profiling each of the winning charities.
Hospitals can be scary places for kids - so Radio Lollipop's mission is to put a bit of fun into children's wards while they are away from home.
The radio station is one of the proud winners of Auckland Airport's 12 Days of Christmas initiative. It has been given $10,000 to spend.
The charity works in six New Zealand hospitals: Starship, Counties Manukau, Kidz First, Waitakere, Whangarei, and Christchurch. Volunteers work in the evenings on children's wards, running a radio station where kids can become presenters. They also play games and give craft bags to the young patients.
Radio Lollipop plans to use the grant money to buy 8000 crayons and games. Lorraine Andrewes, NZ Radio Lollipop chairwoman, said she is "absolutely ecstatic" to have received the award. "You apply all the time for grants," she said.
