An illegal Afghani overstayer has been jailed for 10 years for shooting his wife in the back-four days after being released from jail on immigration matters.
At the High Court in Auckland today, Justice Rhys Harrison imposed a minimum six-year non-parole period on Wali Javed Allahyai.
Allahyai, 28, represented by Peter Kaye, was earlier found guilty of 12 charges including wounding with intent to cause GBH, but was cleared of attempted murder of his wife, New Zealander Amanda Louise Hapeta.
Prosecutor Natalie Walker said that an aggravating feature was that Allahyai spent 15-20 minutes phoning friends to dispose of the gun before calling an ambulance.
The court heard that Allahyai is to be deported on his release from jail.
