A 10-year-old Opotiki boy was today seriously injured after diving into a swimming pool and striking the bottom with his head.
The Rotorua-based Bay Trust Rescue helicopter said the boy's neck was seriously injured when he accidentally landed in the shallow end of the private pool around 5pm.
Rescue helicopter pilot Todd Dunham said: "The boy had gone to dive into the pool and he slipped at the edge and it skewed his dive. The water was quite shallow and he hit his head resulting in the injury."
The boy was treated at the scene by St John paramedics before being flown to hospital for further treatment.
