A scaffolding pole, signs, various car parts and an unopened can of tuna were just some of the discoveries 35 tidy locals found after spending an hour earlier this month picking up litter in the city.
The second annual BIG Tennent Drive Tidy Up was the focus of this year's Keep New Zealand Beautiful Clean Up Week 2017 activity organised by Fonterra employee Tom Carr and Palmy Dirty 30's Heather Knox.
Volunteers met in front of the AgResearch main entrance on Dairy Farm Rd at 12pm, where they were provided with gloves, bags and grabbers kindly provided by Fonterra.
Within the hour, the team had picked up 27 bags of rubbish which mostly contained both plastic and glass bottles, coffee cups and takeaway food containers and wrappers.
One volunteer, Tim Gibbes, also picked up 1021 cigarette butts from a small area at Anzac Park.
