The decision around who will be the next Government is resting in Winston Peter's hands and Mr Lees-Galloway said they were in limbo awaiting the final party result.
"We really are waiting to see what the next term holds. It is absolutely dictated by whether we're in Government or opposition. There are some things that I want to see happen in Palmerston North and I will use my role as the local MP to try and make those happen."
Among those issues are social housing and mental health.
"They are the two biggest issues we deal with in my electorate office. I really do want to see some moves on social housing -- we had Jacinda Ardern come to Palmerston North and say Labour would build 150 houses -- obviously that has been heard.
"There's a range of housing issues we need to get working on."
This meant conversations with the city's mayor and social organisations to see what role they could play.
Mr Lees-Galloway said the majority of concerns regarding mental health were centred around Ward 21 in Palmerston North Hospital.
"We definitely need to make sure the hospital has the resources it needs to upgrade it and provide the services it needs too. But mental health is about more than what goes on in the hospital.
"It's about making sure that we've got good services in the community, that when young people identify as needing support they get it in a timely manner. And I'd like to see a lot more mental health services provided in primary healthcare."
He said there wasn't a single debate in the city that didn't feature these two issues. He's also aware of the need to be proactive and make himself available over the next three years to provide solutions.
"I think people appreciate someone who is active, someone who goes out of their way to be available ... and knowing my door's always open. I think every MP who acts in that way will be respected by their community."
