Jacinda Ardern comes from the small Waikato town of Morrinsville.
But during the election, despite being 'one of their own', the town became the centre of protests against Ardern's plans for a water tax.
One month later, Winston Peters chooses Labour to form a government and Ms Ardern is Prime Minister elect.
So Local Focus went back to Morrinsville to see if anything had changed, and we were surprised.
Meanwhile, further south in the Labour stronghold of Palmerston North, support isn't quite as strong. On the streets, as many people are disapointed with Winston's choice, as those who say they are "quite excited actually".
