Cancer survivor Laura Roberts was striving to get back to her old self at last week's Manawatu Warrior Race.

After being diagnosed with liver cancer in June 2014 at 33 weeks pregnant, and going through multiple operations and cancer treatments, Mrs Roberts dusted off her running shoes and completed a 3.2km obstacle course.

The race at the Manawatu River contained multiple challenging and fun obstacles from river runs to tyre flipping.

Mrs Roberts said the course was great fun although it was very tough.

"I was very determined to finish the race and believed I managed myself really well. I am a very motivated person and will definitely have my fitness levels up by next time to complete the 6.4km race."

Mrs Roberts was a frequent exerciser before she became pregnant and would exercise up to five or six times a week.

Event co-ordinator Dave Mollard said the day was for all ages, of all abilities to enjoy.

"We wanted to encourage participants and families to get out and engage with our rivers and really see the great city we live in."

The Manawatu Warrior Race is an annual event where all money raised goes to Crewe Community Garden.

Mr Mollard hopes to have the next event in the inner city.
