Men are only accepted into Fellowship House if they can demonstrate they have started on the pathway of positive change. They must also be willing to accept help.
Pony was "quite rapt" when his application to become a resident was accepted because he had nowhere else to go. Probation requires inmates to have a suitable address before they are released. If Fellowship House had not taken him in, he would still be in prison.
Residents pay rent and must follow the house rules which include no alcohol or drugs, no children and no overnight visitors. They are also required to do volunteer work or study while seeking fulltime work.
Pony is grateful to the "awesome" volunteers who mentor him and offer 24/7 support enabling him to make positive links in the community.
"The volunteers are really proactive in their approach to the boys that are coming out."
Since being released, Pony has gained a qualification in traffic management and now has a fulltime job.
"I can only see a brighter future for me now. Certainly nothing to do with prison life.
"I've left that life behind."
Audrey has volunteered for the trust for more than 12 years and is proud of the support it provides.
"I think we do a fantastic job. Men who really want to turn their lives around get lots of help."
The trust is seeking volunteers who have the time and interpersonal skills required to effectively support residents. If you are interested please contact Audrey on 027 554 7915.
