When you wear perfume or cologne, do you spray it in front of you and walk into the scented cloud? Or do you spritz a small amount on one wrist and stamp it to the other?

If you want your scent to last longer than five minutes, here's how to apply your fragrance according to an expert.

Speaking to Huffington Post, Patti Kapla, vice-president of business development at perfume website FragranceNet.com shared her top tips for getting the most out of perfume.

Where to apply

The top four areas to spray perfume are the nape of the neck, insides of the elbows, wrists, and the creases behind your knees.

When to apply

Moisturising before using perfume provides a base for your fragrance to latch on to.

Try the hairbrush trick

Spray your fragrance on to your hairbrush before running it through your hair. Kapla recommends this over direct spritzing as it may dry hair out.

What not to do

If you adhere to none of the above, at least subscribe to the golden rule of never rubbing perfume together on your wrists. Kapla says this "breaks up the top notes".
