KEY POINTS:
They met last November at a friend's gig on the North Shore and instantly clicked. One year on, Auckland band White Birds and Lemons have caught the attention of music industry insiders and are set to open for platinum-selling band Evermore at two Auckland shows tonight.
Major event promoter Brent Eccles invited the band to open for Evermore and Pluto at the two Studio gigs, but vocalist and guitarist Scott Frantz isn't entirely sure how the gig came about.
"To be honest, I don't actually know. No one really knows..." said a puzzled-sounding Frantz.
The band, which includes drummer Rob Dickens, guitarist Matt Wilson and bass player Dom Dipple, have spent the past year touring the North Island. They recently took a break from live shows to concentrate on their upcoming EP, which Mint Chicks frontman Kody Nielson has signed on to produce.
With a couple of demos under their belt, the band have written all the material for the EP and will head to the studio later this month.
Frantz is unsure when the final record will be released but said it should be ready early next year.
For those heading along to tonight's gigs, Frantz says you're in for a night of unrehearsed magic.
"We haven't been able to practice for about a month so it will be quite spontaneous, I suppose," said Frantz.
"There might be a few made up bits, here and there."
But that's all part of the show says Frantz.
"We have room for a bit of ad-lib. We like to not practice so much, so we can have that live element at all our shows."
The on-stage antics should make for interesting viewing. Tonight's show will be filmed for a promotional video, to accompany the band's EP release.
* White Birds and Lemons open for Pluto and Evermore at the Studio, K Rd, tonight. An all ages show will begin a 6pm, before an R18 gig at 9pm.
