Woman to the rescue after van crashes into doggy daycare

Dogs scattered and at least one was injured when a van crashed through the wall of an Auckland doggy daycare.

Personal trainer Sonjia Peck took to Facebook to share the scary moment a van "smashed" through the roller door of Pinky's Pet Boarding in Botany Junction today, setting loose five or six dogs.

"This white van smashed through the doggy daycare by our gym and all the dogs bolted," she wrote, explaining how she and several others from Auckland gym Zero-2-100 chased the scared pups.

"Me and my gym class heroes bolted after them. I got the poor wee old black one from behind the dumpsters, Nik saved the poodle, and Mike cradled the poor Hairy Maclary that got hit by a car.

"All dogs accounted for except one small tan dog."

Peck told The Hits radio station the van moved "suddenly fast" causing it to smash through the roller door that the dogs were directly behind.

"It was like a 'prison break' type thing," she said. "Dogs were injured in the crash – the one I picked up has a bleeding leg."

Dogs bolted in all directions, and the missing pet ran through a fruit store and fled towards Te Irirangi Drive.

One dog was hit by a car, and was "limp" when picked up by the gym owner Mike.

"I asked when I returned if that dog was alive and they said yes but losing a lot of blood."

Peck also urged people to contact Pinky's Pet Boarding on (09) 265 2865 if they spot the missing dog.

Meanwhile, the van's driver was spoken to by a police officer, who was coincidentally in the bakery next door.

"He came across right away to hear the story," Peck said.

Pinkys Pet Boarding and Grooming said, in a statement, they would like to send their condolences to the families affected.

"The staff and owners of Pinkys Pet Boarding and Grooming have been greatly affected by yesterday's event and would like to thank our loyal customers for sticking by us during this devastating time," the said.

"We would also like to extend our thanks to all the people and neighbouring businesses who helped yesterday."
