Ulf was lonely. The pack either ignored him or tried to drive him away when he had so much to offer.
Dane's mum and dad were offering to get him a dog again.
"What about getting a dog like Brad's Alaskan malamute," said Dad. it in dog shows. If you had one, you could take it to shows, too."
"I suppose so," said Dane hesitantly. He didn't add that his cousin Brad's malamute always stared at him through narrowed eyes and made him nervous. Nor did he add that Brad probably wouldn't want him tagging along at his fancy dog shows. Brad thought Dane was a wimp.
"Would you rather have a terrier?" asked Dad. "They're great little dogs."
"Maybe," said Dane. Terriers were small, but they had lots of sharp teeth. His cousin Miranda had a terrier that once chewed Uncle Mike's shoes into pieces. Uncle Mike had been furious.
"I think we should really try to get a dog from the dog pound," suggested Mum. "I'm sure they've got plenty of dogs that need good homes."
"Well, we don't have to decide anything today," said Dad. "We'll have plenty of time after you get back from camp."
