Sandringham has long been the home of all things Indian, and the better for it in my opinion, but something different in the mix can be a good thing. So when I heard there was a new cafe there, I rounded up the usual suspects to check it out.
WKA sits long and narrow on its corner site, but white walls and big windows keep it light. Little, two-person tables line one wall, and a passageway takes you past the kitchen to the most delightful courtyard. It's far enough away from the traffic not to have to shout, and you can still hear the soft jazz.
Sally ordered the pancakes with banana, bacon and maple syrup ($10), having often eyed her father's favourite, and got through most of the huge helping. She thought it was a little light on the syrup, but I'm sure that nice proprietor fellow Scott would have come through with more had she asked.
David went for bangers and mash ($9.50), was well-pleased, and still had room to finish off Sally's pancakes. He also spotted a huge mixed grill being carried past, at $15 the most expensive item on the menu, and swore he'd be back to try it.
Bill had spotted the array of sweet stuff on his way to the courtyard, so thought something light would leave room for afters. His omelette with tomato, cheese and bacon ($8.50) disappeared at lightning speed, as did the chocolate brownie slice he finished with. We were allowed a nibble, and voted it delicious and not overly sweet.
I survived the disgusted looks and offal jokes with my devilled kidneys on toast ($9.50) and thoroughly enjoyed a treat I hadn't had for years. Scott says it's one of their most popular dishes. So there, you lot. Bring on the tripe, I say.
