KEY POINTS:
Sydney: Australians may not think twice when pulling on their budgie smugglers, flushing their dual-flush toilet or firing up the Victa lawnmower.
But all three of these famous creations have been listed in an online poll to decide Australia's most iconic design.
The list, compiled by Home Beautiful magazine, aims to highlight the importance of design in Australian lives.
"Some design purists might baulk at the inclusion of items such as the four-litre wine cask, Speedos or the Esky, but these quintessential designs really shaped the way Australians lived and socialised," Home Beautiful editor Wendy Moore said.
Some of the contenders are likely to generate debate, with the Ford ute, Holden Monaro, Victa lawnmower and Hills Hoist clothesline all listed.
Other designs included on the list are America's Cup winner Australia II and its winged keel, flotation devices - "floaties" - for children and the Qantas Skybed.
And with the Australian love of food, utensil and appliance designs including the Breville sandwich toaster and the splayd - the combination of a spoon and a blade - make the list. "In the kitchen, Australia has been the source of many inspired design objects that have made our lives and eating habits more enjoyable," Ms Moore said.
Australian designer Marc Newson has two spots on the list with his Lockheed Lounge and the Skybed.
The list was compiled with help from the Sydney Powerhouse Museum and Canberra's Questacon.
