By DAVID HILL
I was walking across it now - a very small part of it, on the way to Sector 5's Briefing Room. Beside me walked my Half-Aunt K'trin, one of the best pilots on Bellatrix. On her other side, Rid the Navigator thudded along, silent and solid.
I wasn't saying much either. Nor was my half-aunt. We were all too jumpy. My hands were curled into fists, my shoulders tight. I made myself breathe deep, closed my eyes for a second and pictured my favourite stars - the golden cluster of the Hyades. That's what my father used to do when he got too tensed up on a mission.
It didn't seem to be helping much with my first mission. My first - and the last I could ever have imagined.
My name is Jotan. My father and grandfather are Jothan and my great-grandfather was Jonthan. Names in our Pilot-Navigator Clan pass down through families.
