Aotea Square is transformed into the Arboria Luminarium, a fantastical world of colour and light, a dazzling maze of winding paths and soaring domes inside a monumental inflatable structure by the Architects of Air.

3: Molto bene
If getting to a piazza in a Tuscan village is too tricky this weekend, head to Newmarket's Osborne and Kent Streets which have been turned over to the annual Festival Italiano. Naturally Italian culture includes heaps of food, plus music, shopping and design spread over 40 stalls. Be in to win a trip to Italy.

4: School gala time
A trio of school galas gets you in the early Christmas shopping mood. Owairoa (Howick) Primary School Gala features an inflatable obstacle course, water walkers and a Lego room, while country schools in Ararimu (near Ramarama) and Drury have cute old ag days and calf club, with all the terrific home baking and stalls you'd expect.

5: Farewell 1866
After nearly 50 years on show, Auckland Museum's longest running exhibition the 1866 street is going out with style. Dress up in Victorian style (costumes provided) and take snaps, meet some local characters and share memories of the street. The collections are being displayed as the street goes into storage for posterity.
