1. Sticky wickets

It cannot have escaped your notice that the

ICC Cricket World Cup

games finally hit Auckland with the Australia v New Zealand match on Saturday. If you haven't scored tickets, you can still join the party - the miniature cricket pitch at Britomart's Takutai square fan zone is the start point for the fan-trail, a party-walk up Queen Street to K Road, New North Road (be there for the parade at 1pm) and on to Eden Park. Great fun, feel free to wear your team colours.

2. Bridle sweet

The start of Auckland Cup Week is

TV3 Derby Day at Ellerslie

. There's the glamour racing, but even better is the fabulous fashion and partying from the sidelines. Don your black and white, check out great food from The Grill, spot your celebrities in the crowd.

3. Little nippers

Sunday is Children's Day, so head to

Motat

for a day of low-fi kiddy fun (entry is free for the day): petting zoo, horse and carriage rides or fire engine rides, plus all the usual MOTAT fun.

There's a children's fair at the ASB Showgrounds with loads of rides, entertainment, giveaways, play areas, shows and exhibitions.

• Childrens' Day, Saturday, 9am-6pm. ASB Showgrounds.

There are family fun days at Selwyn Reserve on Tamaki Drive, Avondale South Domain in Blockhouse Bay, Te Pai Park in Henderson, Western Park in Ponsonby and Parrs Park, Oratia - thanks to GirlGuidingNZ (stock up on those biccies too, it's the season).

4. Beach babes

Back for another sizzling season are two shows from those synchronised mermais, the

Wet Hot Beauties

. They're ditching the pool and hitting the beach in a swinging '60s tribute to Californian beach culture. This week Takapuna,n ext week Point Chev.

5. Toot toot

The Glenbrook railway people have their special Day Out with Thomas the Tank Engine, and his friends Rusty, Bulgy, Trevor, Terence and Caroline, with Sir Topham Hatt and the Fat Controller ensuring everything runs smoothly. With train rides, story-telling, bouncy castle, face painting and more. Stop by the Glenbrook School Gala on Saturday while you're at it.
