2. Market finery
This weekend both Silo Park and the Museum host great Matariki arts markets. At Silo there's street food, music - including performances from TrinityRoots and X-Factor winner Beau Monga (Sunday from midday) - plus Maori artists showing their work. The museum has more work from Maori artists, musicians, performers and poets, with the chance to purchase well-curated works from leading creatives in Tamaki Makaurau. Matariki Rewoven at Glen Innes new Te Oro arts centre has a concert, kai and market day plus workshops in tivaevae, tapa, whakairo, poi making, rongoa Maori and weaving.

3. Haere ra holidays
Get the young ones along today to Caterpillars, the hilarious tale of two clumsy puppeteers who attempt to put on a beautiful show about the life cycle of a caterpillars. The glorious set and flitting butterflies descend into chaos as the hapless puppeteers lose control of the show - people are raving. Strap on your skates for the last weekend of icy sparkle at the Aotea Square ice rink - the finale includes ice fairies, ice sport demonstrations and even snow.

4. All that glitters
Auckland Art Gallery hosts the travelling show from Dowse Art Museum, Wunderruma - beautiful curiosities brought together in the largest collection of contemporary New Zealand jewellery with pieces including Maori taonga and Pacific treasures, over 75 artists in all. Workshops today and tomorrow with jeweller Matthew McIntyre, Sharon Fitness and Neke Moa, discussions with museum and fashion directors and more.

5. C'est Bastille Day - again
It's still not too late to celebrate Bastille Day - Remuera has a street festival with roving musicians, mime artists, French street entertainers, caricature artists and Can Can dancers, plus the chance to win great prizes. And the sounds of French music will fill the rooms of historic Alberton in a stirring concert of music by Faure, Debussy, Offenbach and Piaf, along with traditional folksongs.
