We've handpicked five things to do around Auckland this weekend.
1. Costume party
Fans don't need to be told that this year Armageddon turns 20, making this the biggest year ever. Expect dinosaur vs zombie encounters, a huge League Of Legends gaming area, Impact Pro Wrestling and plenty of cosplay competitions and colourful parades. Perhaps the eating challenges are up your alley, or you'd rather just listen to music and watch the world go by. But note that Saturday's tickets are restricted to pre-sale access and very limited door sales (if any).
New Zealand's largest fan-created Lego display, Auckland Lego Brick Show, features trains, monorails, subways, amusement parks, airports, Star Wars, a giant Lego Rube Goldberg machine - well, pretty much everything you can make from the tiny plastic bricks. Nostalgia buffs can check out the huge history display featuring sets from the 1960s. Online bookings highly recommended.
Until Monday, 9am-5.30pm. ASB Stadium.
3. Flicks for kids
The Screenies Children's International Film Festival is the only film festival to be aimed at children aged 3-15, with short films from New Zealand and around the world. Check out the newly digitised Margaret Mahy short films plus plenty of interactive workshops and hands-on activities to feed young imaginations.
Today and tomorrow, TAPAC.
4. Trainspotting
Trainspotters and anoraks will already have on their birthday calendar that it's Glenbrook Vintage Railway's locomotive WW644's 100th birthday. You can take train rides, take part in jigger time trials and on Monday there's a country market, bouncy castles and plenty of kids' entertainment.
Until Monday, 10am-5pm. Glenbrook Vintage Railway.
Yeah, it seems a little early to us too, but Motat are celebrating Olde Hallows Eve this weekend, with The Danse Macabre. The Dance of Death has the Grim Reaper summoning skeletons from the grave at midnight, so dress up in your scariest costume and cavort with the creepy characters at New Zealand's largest Halloween event.
