Valentine's Day is one of the most popular days to propose.

If you're planning to pop the question and confused about how to craft the right ring for your lady love, Kiwi jewellery designer Mike Piercey from MICHAELHJOHN has some insider tips.

Piercey has designed thousands of unique engagement rings. The first thing he wants to know is what the lucky lady is like? What does she love and hate? What kind of things does she wear?

"I'm not going to give away all my trade secrets, but I try and extract as much information about the person as I can," he tells www.nzherald.co.nz, gushing about the perks of his job.

"My clients are at one of the happiest times of their lives and I get to be part of that. I get to work with a lot of happy people, it's amazing."

Piercey says classic platinum single stone and clusters are the most popular pieces right now, and gold has lost it's appeal.
