WORKING GIRL
Herald rating: * * *
Melanie Griffith stars as an ambitious secretary who manages to climb the corporate ladder when her boss (Sigourney Weaver) breaks her leg skiing. She brokers a deal with an investment banker (Harrison Ford), but things go crazy when her boss returns. Witty rom-com. (1988)

SUMMER OF SAM
Herald rating: * * * *
Director Spike Lee traded his usual themes of tension within black American communities for a story of paranoia in a 1970s New York-Italian community. Set in 1977 against a backdrop of fear generated by power blackouts, a heat wave and the very real Son of Sam murders by serial killer David Berkowitz, all of New York is in a state of confusion, so much so that people are regarding their closest friends with suspicion. The overall tone is reminiscent of Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets. (1999)
