A US mum has revealed the shocking moment a stranger attempted to kidnap her baby girl after originally offering up a pet dog in exchange.
Rachel Youngs was in the baby section of Target with her daughter when a woman with a dog approached her.
Youngs told WHDH she originally thought the woman was joking when she said: "I'll trade you my dog for your baby."
The stranger then showed interest in the baby and asked if she could hold Youngs' daughter.
But while holding the baby, the stranger began to make strange and alarming comments.
Youngs said: "She starts asking me, 'do you have a godmother?' I said 'no,' and she said 'I'd love to be your godmother, I'll split everything 50/50,' and I was like this is kind of weird, like, who says this to a random person?"
The stranger revealed she had previously been arrested for attempted kidnapping before walking away with Youngs' baby.
The mum began to panic, yelling "I need my baby back, please. Give me my baby back".
After hesitating, the stranger then gave the child back to Youngs.
According to the mother, police were called but told her nothing could be done.
"They just said, 'well, there's nothing we can really do because you technically gave her permission to hold your baby'," Youngs said, "and my exact words were, 'okay, so me giving her permission to hold my baby for a couple minutes gives her permission to take off with my child?'"
Police say they know the woman in question and are still investigating.
