There were giants in those dark undiscovered lands. And creatures with six arms, a sword in each; coasts of black sand and high mountains that spat red fire into the sky. Dark magic places and darker mystery.
That was why we were building this ship. To journey to those places . . .Where no ship returned from.
All spring I had worked on this ship, its ribs like a giant wooden fish-skeleton around me. I could dream about going on a journey to unknown lands. But my dreams always ended with a hard thump on my back and a hoarse bellow.
'Dreaming again, little rat!'The monsters of that unknown land could not look more horrible than Thegus.
His thick hair was matted with lumps of the black pitch we smeared on the ship's hull. His face was blotchy, his nose broken and his ears bitten from fights.
A knife-cut scarred one cheek, and his eyes were red from all that he drank.
