Ben had been playing a virtual reality game in Vince's shed that Saturday when the electricity was cut off. He had used a computer program to design a perfect friend for himself. He had called him `Rory Polestar' and had had a great time with him.

Rory had disappeared when the power went off. That was not surprising. What was astonishing was that Rory had turned up at Ben's school on Monday morning! Rory and Ben had had a fantastic week together. Everyone seemed to want to be where Rory was. Ben made lots of new friends. But the day the electricity had come back on again, Rory had faded and disappeared.
