KEY POINTS:
The city of Rome has seen a lot over its 3000 or so years, but possibly nothing like the media 'circus maximus' about to enfold over the next few days.
A plethora of Hollywood's glitterati are descending on the ancient city for the society wedding of the year - that of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.
As Cruise and Holmes prepare for their nuptials this weekend, the couple took to the streets with baby Suri, in what is believed to be her first public outing.
Guests for the celebrity wedding are flocking to the Italian capital, including Kirstie Alley, Giorgio Armani and the Beckhams, as well as fellow scientologists John Travolta, Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett-Smith.
Martin and Kathy Holmes, parents of the bride, arrived in Rome last night (NZ time) for what is fast becoming the media circus of the century.
One person who did not make the guest list, however, was Cruise's close friend, Oprah Winfrey.
Cruise hit headlines around the world last year when he professed his love for Holmes on Oprah's show, jumping up and down on the yellow leather sofa.
However, Oprah told US television reporter AJ Calloway she was not offended.
"They had a limited number of people that they could invite. I was not one of the invitees. That's fine. I don't get invited to everyone's wedding. I don't invite them to everything I do. But I wish them the best."
