A New Zealand university's student magazine has put its own spin on a famous Rolling Stone cover, replicating a John Lennon and Yoko Ono shot for a sex-themed issue.
Otago's student magazine, Critic Te Arohi, has run dual covers reproducing Annie Leibovitz's famous 1980 image of a naked Lennon wrapped around a fully clothed Ono for its 16th issue - except one cover shows a woman and man, and the other shows two men.
Editor Sam McChesney said the covers were to illustrate Critic's "sex issue" and challenge perceptions about sexuality. "We went with the two guys as well as the guy and the girl to raise awareness of heteronormativity and try and challenge that perception a little bit," he said.
The cover images did not relate directly to one particular article, but represented different aspects of the entire content, McChesney said.
The features included intersex issues, a look at advice from women's magazine "sexperts", student sexual health, and sexual abuse awareness.
