Actress Uma Thurman's make-up artist has hit out at claims that the actress has undergone cosmetic surgery, blaming her seemingly altered appearance at a recent red carpet event on an experimental make-up look.
The 44-year-old Kill Bill star sparked worldwide speculation about her appearance after she stepped out at a premiere for her new miniseries The Slap with what critics described as a "suspiciously smooth forehead" with an extremely tight smile.
But while many have suggested that the actress' fresh-faced look was the result of a cosmetic procedure, celebrity make-up artist Troy Surratt insisted to People.com that Uma was merely "experimenting" with her beauty look, adding that he was "surprised" by the reaction to it.
"By now I would have thought that we were all open to and knowledgeable of the role that makeup plays in the world of fashion and particularly celebrity, as a medium for creative self expression," he said.
"I think that women should feel open and free to experiment with different beauty looks - it's only makeup, at the end of the day it all washes off."
When Uma debuted her new beauty look earlier this week, many critics were quick to compare her facial transformation to that of fellow Hollywood star Renee Zellweger, who caused quite the stir last year when she revealed her own drastically different look.
At the time Renee told People: "I'm glad folks think I look different! I'm living a different, happy, more fulfilling life, and I'm thrilled that perhaps it shows."
But Troy, who has also worked with the likes of Adriana Lima, Kristin Davis and Charlize Theron, insists that he and Uma had lengthy conversations about her altered make-up look prior to her red carpet appearance, with both deciding that it would be fun to do something unconventional with her cosmetics.
Explaining that he has grown tired "of all the lash-y looks" that are so frequently worn by stars on the red carpet, Troy explained that he opted to focus Uma's look around a bold red lip.
And, he added, in doing so, he chose to forgo mascara and eyeliner in favor of concentrating on her complexion and her lipstick, which is what caused the area around her eyes to appear slightly different.
When it came to creating that fresh-faced glow, the make-up artist seemed to scoff at claims that Uma's smooth skin was the result of any kind of surgical procedure and insisted that it was his unique blend of beauty products which helped to create her youthful appearance.
"I prepped Uma's skin by massaging with Creme de la Mer The Concentrate," he said.
"I applied a glowing foundation using a Beauty Blender for a super natural look."
Prior to Troy's statement, experts suggested Uma's dramatic transformation, especially around her eyes could well have been the result of a cosmetic procedure.
Mark Norfolk, Clinical Director at Transform Cosmetic Surgery told DailyMail.com: "Uma certainly looks like she's undergone a dramatic transformation and in my opinion, she's looking too overdone.
"The thing that strikes me most is that her eye area looks very different. It looks as though she's had a recent lower blepharoplasty treatment, also known as eye bag removal. She isn't wearing any eyeliner or mascara, probably in order to avoid infection from the new surgery.
"Her face shape seems to have changed significantly - her face looks less defined.
"I would say that she's probably had a recent course of strong chemical peels as well as some dermal filler injected into the cheeks and nasal labial area; which is all contributing to this swollen-looking finish as it can have this effect immediately after undergoing these treatments."
