"Serious question: is this in earnest or intentionally ironic parody?" One person asked after the tweet was posted.
But mostly everyone was surprised that this is what one company is focusing on in terms of inclusion.
One person wrote: "1960: In 2018 we'll have flying cars and travel across space! 2018: We removed an egg from an emoji because it hurt someones feelings."
A consistent point to the change that people made was that by excluding the egg, it also excluded most people who did not participate in veganism.
"Why don't you make a salad for every preference instead of this hateful exclusion of everyone who isn't vegan?" One angry commenter wrote.
The salad emoji was not the only one that received a redesign for the Android update.
"Our goat is no longer so angry. The turtle really needed a hug. And we gave the Grinning Face With One Large and One Small Eye some anti-anxiety meds," the Google manager explained.
Jennifer, who probably didn't realize her tweet would blow up like it did, has since clarified the thought process that went into changing the salad emoji.
Her tweet read: "Hello carnivores, vegans and everyone in between! Just want to clarify that the goal of salad emoji redesign was to create an image more faithful to unicode's description. 'A bowl of healthy salad, containing lettuce, tomato, and other salad items such as cucumber.' Bon appetite!"
This logic was quickly shot down after people noticed that the healthy salad's cucumber appeared to be missing from the new image.
It remains unclear if that was always Google's logic for pulling the egg or if it was actually fueled by the vegan community.
