Trump will never be invited back to Met Gala, says Vogue's Anna Wintour

The Met Gala ball is the highlight of New York's social calendar. An invitation indicates membership of America's fashion, celebrity or financial elite.

But Donald Trump, who proposed to his wife Melania at the party in 2004, need not expect to receive one in the post next year.

Anna Wintour, the tastemaker-in-chief who co-chairs the fundraising event, has revealed she will not be asking the President back.

The Vogue editor-in-chief dropped the bombshell during an appearance on The Late Late Show, hosted by James Corden.

In a segment called "Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts", she was asked to either tell the audience who she would never invite back to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's benefit gala or take a forfeit of eating pickled pig's feet.

"Donald Trump," she said, to raucous applause.

Wintour took over organising the event in 1999. Then it was essentially a local fundraiser, held to support the museum's Costume Institute and attended by the great and the good of New York.

Under her watch it has grown into a celebrity celebration, known variously as the party of the year or the Oscars of the East Coast.

The guest list is hand picked by Wintour and her organisers. A handful of invitations are sent to those at the pinnacle of the fashion world or with the right kind of celebrity status.

This year, individual tickets were priced at $30,000. Not only is there a waiting list but each sale must still be approved by Ms Wintour herself - even guests and plus ones - as part of an effort to keep out riff and raff and maintain the event's exclusivity.

Trump has been a frequent guest since the 1980s but need not expect another invitation from Wintour who has been a frequent critic of his time in power.

Corden also put the Vogue editor-in-chief on the spot by asking her to rank the fashion designers Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs and Ralph Lauren or eating a bite of bacon-wrapped pizza.

"They are all masters of their universe. But, solely because he was my dinner companion last night, Tom Ford," she answered before refusing to go further and eating the grease-covered pizza instead.

She earlier confessed to hating fast food.
