This was one of NZH Lifestyle's top stories for 2017
We're all familiar with chocolate milk, some of us will have tried chocolate butter but what about the latest chocolate craze: Chocolate water?!
I know. We had the same thought.
Chocolate contains milk solids, which is why it's usually paired with dairy products. Think chocolate ganache, chocolate gelato, chocolate milkshakes, the list goes on...
But it doesn't usually go so far as to be paired with water. Just water. And maybe there's a reason the combination has never come to fruition before. That is until the folks at h2go decided to make it happen.
The NZH Lifestyle team were skeptical, to say the least, so we had to try it.
Meet our crash test dummies George and Cam and find out what they think of Chocolate Flavoured h2go.
Step 1: First impressions
Before taking a sip, George and Cam made a considered analysis of the product. Deciding it looks like dishwater after you've washed a chocolate brownie tray was not a great start.
However, Cam was a fan of the packaging, noting the chocolate drips remind him of Kylie Jenner's lip kits. George was not familiar.
While they were impressed to see the product is low in sugar, they were disappointed to learn there is in fact no chocolate in the product.
Step 2: The sniff test
"Ooh wow," said Cam after taking a whiff. "It smells kind of like Baileys."
George decided it was "quite aromatic" and reminded him of chocolate Moosies from school tuck shops.
Step 3: The taste test
Cam decides the best approach is a "danger swig", which he happily demonstrates. He is immediately overwhelmed by the new flavour. "Whoa, interesting ... It's a delicious hot chocolate, but not quite there."
George likens the taste to "when your mum goes and makes you a Milo and puts too much water in it."
The boys decided while it was an interesting product to try, they wouldn't be prepared to pay for it again. They'd rather go for a chocolate bar and a nice bottle of water. Or chocolate milk.
Cam summed up the experience with a succinct "What is the point?"
