Crystal ball-gazing is one way of looking ahead to winter. But if you're not interested in finding out from the woman with the pack of tarot cards in her hand that you will find love in a pair of green cigarette pants, there's another, slightly more scientific way. Go ask those designing the clothes, what their hot picks for the coming season are and what they wouldn't be caught dead in. We did just that.
Hailwood
The big hit from own range: denim, including super-stovepipes and piped jackets.
Incoming trend: knits with jacquard prints and a high-waisted trouser.
Not sorry to see the back of: flared jeans with overworked rubbings.
Liz Mitchell
The big hit from own range: the tweed jackets and Swarovski customised knitwear and T-shirts.
Incoming trend: the mix of fabrics and textures, rich embellishments, slouchy relaxed pants and a more feminine and sophisticated way of dressing.
Not sorry to see the back of: bare midriffs.
Trelise Cooper
The big hit from own range: beaded 1920s-inspired Charleston Heston dress, which can be worn simply as a sexy dress or layered over pants.
Incoming trend: metallic finishes, antique and vintage beading, fur collars and wraps, tweed, prints.
Not sorry to see the back of: the 70s retro look.
Caroline Church
The big hit from own range: merino knits with Lycra. The best piece is the cropped cardigan jacket fastened with a pearl brooch in good old black and garnet red.
Incoming trend: interesting tailored garments are making a return, but with an unusual twist in the cut or detailing. Beautiful timeless jackets in good quality wool are always a great investment.
Not sorry to see the back of: the old gap around the middle with a roll of flesh hanging out or the tatty G-string poking up over it. I hope I never again. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
World
The big hit from own range: our monarch butterfly dress. It's so beautiful it almost hurts. Also, our concept circle dress. Again, it's an innovative and colourful classic beauty.
Incoming trend: anything 1920s or 1940s. Very predictable and boring. Everyone who copies overseas trends will be serving this up.
Not sorry to see the back of: baby doll dresses in crap fabrics and gold lame. Oops. We did those.
Pearl
The big hit from own range: we love our wool crepe collection. The drape and texture of this fabric is stunning.
Incoming trend: really beautiful knits, printed silks and warm colours.
Not sorry to see the back of: the weather.
Sylvester
The big hit from own range: my favourite piece is the chunky cardy, in green or pink. Looks great with anything from jeans to suiting to floral chiffon and tulle dress-ups.
Incoming trend: eccentric tweeds. Very Bloomsbury or, in our case, Mitford sisters. They're a fresh, feminine take on suiting.
Not sorry to see the back of: faux distressed denim and prim, uptight pussycat bow blouses.
Doris de Pont
The big hit from own range: a Sita skirt, topped with something trim and fitted in an exotic colour and a short, tailored print jacket, then add a tulle petticoat, a large cotton scarf or Turkish weave Baboa coat.
Incoming trend: earrings, bracelets, necklaces in raw golds with chunky stones or linked together on ribbon.
Not sorry to see the back of: not much but am looking forward to winter for the chance to dress up again.
Nom*D
The big hit from own range: cable knit vest. It's a cool look that's slightly country but also street.
Incoming trend: chunky, textured knits.
Not sorry to see the back of: ugg boots.
Carlson
The big hit from own range: pleated loose-leg tweed pants.
Incoming trend: not so much anything new but, having just been in the United States, it seems like there's a continuation of fitted velvet jackets, sparkly tops and jeans.
Not sorry to see the back of: over-designed garments with everything but the kitchen sink on them.
Karen Walker
The big hit from own range: high-waisted tailored pants with poppy print, narrow-cut shirt and matching tie.
Incoming trend: a return to tailoring.
Not sorry to see the back of: novelty denim.
