Many people made a promise over the New Year to get fit and healthy in 2014. A crucial component of any workout (other than neon trainers and bright pink leg warmers... they're coming back next, right?) is an awesome music mix to help get the blood pumping as you attack the treadmill.
Having the right songs in your playlist can make all the difference when working up a sweat, said sports psychologist, Dr Costa Karageorghis.
Not only does a great playlist motivate you to work - it can also help make your sweaty session easier and more productive, he said.
"When synching your movements to the beat of the music, increase the intensity of your workout by raising the music tempo - this will increase your workrate with the added benefit that the difference in effort will be almost imperceptible".
There are over 6 million 'workout' playlists registered on music sharing website, Spotify. They've tracked down the most popular tunes and - with the help of Dr Karageorghis - have complied an Ultimate Workout playlist featuring Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' high-energy track Can't Hold Us (feat. Ray Dalton), proven to be one of the most popular workout songs around the world. While Runnin' by New Zealand's own David Dallas, is a fitness fave for Kiwi gym-goers.
