LONDON - Top of the Pops is launching its own awards show to rival the Brits in rewarding the cream of chart stars, it was announced yesterday.
Programme bosses want it to be the biggest event in the pop calendar when the lavish ceremony kicks off next year with performances from top stars.
Fans will be invited to make their own choices of who should win, with viewers, Radio 1 listeners, web surfers and readers of the show's spin-off magazine invited to cast their votes.
The show will take place in Manchester, the city from which Top of the Pops was first broadcast in 1964 from a converted church. It has gone on to become the world's biggest music TV show broadcasting to 88 countries.
BBC Manchester's head of entertainment, Wayne Garvie, said: "There's no bigger name in the world of music television than Top of the Pops and there'll be no bigger party than the Top of the Pops Awards.
