1. Medal of Honour Allied Assault
Does for PC war games what Saving Private Ryan did for war movies. A gripping and challenging game.
2. Age of Mythology
Age of Empires 3 but better than the earlier two games, which were pretty good.
3. Mafia
A salutary tale which shows that although crime doesn't pay, it can be lots of fun. The Sopranos on PC.
4. Warcraft 3
Old games never die, but get reinvented as online epics. A long overdue makeover for a classic title.
5. Medieval Total War
A vast, great-looking game which will test the strategic abilities of all armchair generals.
6. Grand Theft Auto 3
A bestseller despite its controversial mix of sleaze and mindless violence, or probably because of it.
7. V8 Supercars
Not the best racing game, but appeals to downunder petrolheads with its stable of Holdens and Fords.
8. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 3
Another racing game which scores for its mix of brilliantly detailed cars and all-out action.
9. Madden 2003
Aimed at American gridiron fans, but gets a place here for its overall excellence in gameplay and graphics.
10. Links 2003
On a par with its rival Tiger Woods Golf, but scores by including Northland's Kauri Cliffs in its course line-up.
