LOS ANGELES - Actor Tom Cruise and actress Katie Holmes, recently photographed together in Rome, are dating, representatives for the couple confimed.

Publicists for the couple said Cruise, 42, and Holmes, 26, had been romantically involved for only few weeks, and declined to comment further on their relationship.

The romance was reported by People and US Weekly magazines after photos of the two holding hands surfaced this week.

Cruise, star of movies like "Mission Impossible" and the upcoming "War of the Worlds," divorced from Nicole Kidman in 2001.

For a time, he dated Spanish beauty Penelope Cruz and was recently linked to Colombian-born actress Sofia Vergara.

Holmes rose to fame in US television drama "Dawson's Creek" and has been working in movies such as this summer's comic-book thriller "Batman Begins."

She was engaged to actor Chris Klein, but the pair split up in March.
