SUPERGROUP
Remember the days when rock'n'roll used to be about fighting conformity and upsetting the establishment? Yeah, well now it's a product, and an increasingly valuable one for makers of reality TV shows, and the record companies that get the spinoff sales. If you need any proof, look no further than Lukas Rossi, the winner of Rockstar: Supernova who was in Auckland this week to promote the Supernova album due soon and their tour next year. In the latest variation on the rock star reality show, SuperGroup throws together five rockers to make a metal band. They live in a lavish Las Vegas mansion and have 12 days to write songs and rehearse for a show. To make things even more challenging, none of the five knows who their bandmates are going to be. The five are ageing guitarist Ted Nugent, Sebastian Bach (Skid Row), Scott Ian (Anthrax), Evan Seinfeld (Biohazard) and Jason Bonham (Foreigner, and son of Led Zep drummer John Bonham). Their manager is Doc McGhee, who was behind the success of Bon Jovi and Motley Crue. His job is to keep the rockers focused on their mission while managing their huge egos and trying to keep them away from the temptations of drink, drugs and lap dancing. After the introductions, the band members must choose a name for their group. The fact that they struggle to do this doesn't augur well for them writing songs and playing together.
