Dads are usually assigned socks, jocks and box of chockies for Fathers' Day. But this weekend we've promised to make it all about him. Here's some dream scenarios for Father's Day, because we are kind and generous people. It'll be our turn soon.

Check out the free design encounter at California Design at the Auckland Art Gallery on Sunday. Classic surfboard designer Roger Hall will have his display of vintage and new boards. Have a chat to Roger and discover the developments in longboard-making over his 40 years of shaping boards. Or pack dad a picnic and let him head to his favourite breaks for the day with the mates (with a nice warm dinner to come home to). He'll think he's 18 again.

The Father and Child Trust has an open day at Ambury Park with a picnic complete with sausage sizzle and lambs for the kids (to feed with bottles, not sizzle on the barbecue, just FYI). Or head to Cornwall Park for an old-fashioned brunch, lunch or afternoon tea with Grandpa - more daffodils, more lambs. Yes, it's that time of the year.

Fish for compliments
Dad may prefer a quiet day of fishing - just him, a boat and a few brews. But if that's not gonna happen, take him over to the Auckland Seafood Markets instead. There's jazz and fabulous food to sample, chef demonstrations and plenty of kid-friendly entertainment. Try out the new Southern-inspired restaurant next door, Miss Clawdys, for more gumbo and seafood treats.
There's always the usual circuit around Woodhill (or further south, everyone's favourite hardcore in Rotorua). But for something a little off the beaten track, check out the forest behind the Maraetai township, more rough and wild with big and small boy-pleasing mud, roots and rocks: all the fun bits.
Details: Maraetai Forest Mountain Bike Tracks, access via Okaroro Drive or at the end of Rewa Rd, Maraetai Beach. Respect locals by leaving driveway access clear and closing gates behind you. No dogs allowed.
