KEY POINTS:
Sweet Charity
Venue: SkyCity Theatre Season ends: Dec 16
Jackie Clarke shines as New York tart with a heart, Sweet Charity. The role is a huge challenge, demanding great singing and dancing, while carrying a show that is big tunes, small on story. She delivers in all areas.
At times Clarke seems cast adrift on a bare stage lacking in razzle dazzle, but Georgia Duder and Stephen Butterworth give terrific support in the cast, and the jazz band brought together by musical director John Gibson is a standout. A special highlight is Hey Big Spender with clever use of acrobatic ropework in the choreography.
Berlin
Venue: Silo Theatre
Season: Dec 5
The Silo's end-of-year cabaret features Jennifer Ward-Lealand, Andrew Laing and Lana Nesnas as three vocalists in the dark, debauched days of Berlin in the late 1920s-early 30s. MC Paul Barrett will take you to your table - with service - and the singers will envelope you in the music of Kurt Weill, Mischa Spoliansky and Friedrich Hollaender. Directed by John Verryt.
