Nicky Watson squeezed into a red satin corset for a star turn as the bride from the bordello at the opening day of New Zealand Fashion Week yesterday.

Modelling for Christchurch designer Barbara Lee - known for her classic looks and the Air New Zealand uniform - Watson sent a frisson through the audience at the Auckland Town Hall as the traditional parade ending of a white bride was supplanted by a scarlet sendoff.

Kiwi couture was the order of the day as 14 designers showed their wares to international buyers and media.

The morning's Style Pasifika show set the mood and was followed by a range of looks, from the commercial to the cutting edge, in the L'Oreal-sponsored event.
