When Dad had worked at the Inland Revenue he had a five-day week with weekends off. Most Sundays had been fishing days. Then he was made redundant. Now he milked cows. For peanuts, he said, but it was a job. And only a couple of kilometres from town so we didn't even have to shift house. We were lucky really, he said. Yeah, right. At first it nearly killed him. Dad was used to sitting at a desk, not to getting up at four in the morning and working a fourteen-hour day. Those first few weeks had been hell. Dad had staggered in the door each night covered in cow muck, with gumboot-chafed feet and blistered hands, grumpy as anything.
