'Danel!' Jac reached over and nudged his friend.
'Rider coming up fast.'
Danel sat up and pulled his hat off his face. Both boys reached into the back of the wagon and selected a stout branch as the rider pulled his mount up alongside.
'You there!' The man's voice was like gravel rolling down a mountain.
'Yes?' Jac looked up and saw the man wasn't a local. He was too tall for a dwarf, and dressed in black from head to foot.
'How far to the next town?' the man rasped, his eyes boring into Jac and Danel as he brushed his grey, wind-blown hair from his face. His sour stare made Jac tighten his grip on the branch.
