By LINDA MCNABB
Jac turned the wagon towards another clump of small bushes and together they silently bounced over the rocky plain. He stopped the horse when they reached the bushes and jumped down to gather wood. At least the effort was keeping him warm. Circus clothes definitely weren't designed for cold weather. Muslin shirts and brightly coloured loose trousers were fine in summer, but the wind bit right through them when it was cold.
They were back on the main road, trying to catch up with the circus when the sound of hooves made him turn. He was relieved to see it wasn't bandits, just a single horseman, riding at full gallop. The hard ground would be bad for the horse's hooves, but the hard-faced man who rode it didn't look as if he cared about horses.
